Key findings

  • City of London has the highest recorded crime rate in the UK at 5,728 crimes per 10,000 people.
  • 5 of the 10 highest-crime areas are in London.
  • The ranking includes 303 areas where police recorded crime data is published at local-authority level.
  • Many top-ranked areas are city centres or business districts where the recorded-crime denominator is the small resident population - daytime workers and visitors aren't counted.

Methodology

Crime rates are based on police recorded crime data from the Home Office (England & Wales, year ending December 2025) and the Scottish Government (2024-25). Rates are calculated per 10,000 population. The ranking covers 303 local authorities where data is published at LA level - Northern Ireland and a small number of English areas where breakdowns are unreliable are excluded. Recording practices vary between police forces, so comparisons should be treated with some caution. A high rate doesn't necessarily mean an area is unsafe for residents - see the breakdown by crime type on each area's profile for context.
