Crime rate map FAQs
Recorded crime statistics only reflect crimes reported to and recorded by police. Recording practices vary between forces, and a high overall rate doesn't necessarily mean an area is unsafe for residents - city centres can show inflated rates due to crimes against tourists and workers measured against a small resident population.
Boundary geometry: ONS local authority boundaries (May 2025, generalised, clipped to coastline). Crime data: Home Office police recorded crime (England & Wales, year ending December 2025), Scottish Government recorded crime (2024-25). Read more on the About page.
